Constipated? Suffering from recurring yeast infections? Or do you experience frequent, painful migraines that just won't go away? Why not visit an applied kinesiologist, who will perform a specialized series of muscle tests to find out what's wrong with you? If you're really lucky, he will use this type of specialized diagnostic testing to help cure your asthma and hayfever and lower your stress levels at the same time. Or will they?

Applied kinesiology, or AK, brings together traditional Chinese medicine with newfangled Western knowledge about the body and its functions, in an attempt to redress the "balance of energy" in the body and bring back harmony and peace. When this energy is out of alignment, a variety of health problems can occur. So AK seeks to redress that balance to achieve better all-around health, both mental and physical.

Like many self-proclaimed natural health therapies, AK purports to be able to treat a wide-ranging list of ailments, ranging from chronic headaches to candida to constipation. To accomplish this, it relies on a complicated type of muscle testing that "identifies" problem areas in the body and then treats them. The idea is that organ dysfunction can manifest itself in muscle weakness, making it easy for an AK practitioner to diagnose all types of disease simply through muscle-testing.

But while followers say it's miraculous, skeptics say it's more fad than fab, and that AK is nothing more than a "pseudoscientific" system that actually does nothing more than – wait for it – deplete your pockets of cash.

Origins of Applied Kinesiology

Applied Kinesiology began way back in 1964, when Dr. George J. Goodheart, Jr., D.C., a chiropractor from Michigan, decided that weak muscles could be used as a comprehensive and reliable diagnostic tool to help ascertain the state of a person's health.

In particular, Dr. Goodheart believed that weaknesses in an individual's spine could point out health problems throughout the body. With these specific weaknesses in mind, he began developing a system of muscle testing based on his "discovery," so he could pinpoint health problems accurately and concentrate his time on treating them.

The premise is simple: Specific muscle weaknesses correspond to specific parts of the body, a theory akin to the basis of acupuncture or reflexology. Using muscle testing, a diagnosis can easily be made and many health problems can thus be easily sorted out, using a variety of tools such as joint manipulation, dietary and nutritional counseling, and even "thought therapy," or thinking good thoughts.

AK, which should not be confused with classical kinesiology, which concentrates on studies of muscles and movement in the body, quickly gained popularity among the chiropractic community. It still enjoys widespread approval today, despite the fact that its efficacy has never been completely scientifically proven.

In fact, AK is so popular that some estimates say that slightly more than one-third of chiropractors today employ Dr. Goodheart's methods. Most practitioners are not just chiropractors, however. They also include nutritionists, medical doctors, massage therapists and, of course, distributors for specific AK-related products.

How It Works

If you decide to visit an applied kinesiologist, your sessions will most likely last around an hour and consist of the following:

Fab or Fad?

No real scientific studies have been carried out to prove AK's effectiveness, although many practitioners have made claims to the contrary. A real danger is that people will choose AK over conventional medicine. For example, Systems DC, based in Pueblo, Colorado, distributes material about AK, including this interesting tidbit (with thanks to Doctors Corner Internet Group, Inc.):

"When an infection develops, have your child examined by your doctor using applied kinesiology. He can evaluate the energy patterns and usually find the reason that the infection developed in the first place. By correcting the energy patterns within the body and paying specific attention to nutritional supplements and dietary management, the infection which your child (using natural health care) does develop will be adequately taken care of in most cases."

According to Stephen Barrett, MD, in his article "Stay Away from Applied Kinesiology" on his Quackwatch website, AK is nothing but a bunch of phony baloney. "The concepts of applied kinesiology do not conform to scientific facts about the causes or treatment of disease. Controlled studies have found no difference between the results with test substances and with placebos," he writes.

"Differences from one test to another may be due to suggestibility, distraction, variations in the amount of force or leverage involved, and/or muscle fatigue. If you encounter a practitioner who relies on AK muscle-testing for diagnosis, head for the nearest exit." Enough said.
