People with combination skin tends to be more oily in the T-zone and dry on the cheeks. When assessing your skin cleansing routine, you need to consider the special needs for both oily and dry areas on your face. Here are the 5 important tips for people with combination skin:
1. Use pH-balanced cleanser. Healthy skin is slightly acidic. It has a natural layer of lipid with pH of 5.5. Always use a cleanser with pH between 4 and 5.5 to reserve this balance. When our skin has balanced pH, it is healthy and less irritable for both oily and dry areas of the skin. Regular soap is alkaline by nature. Using regular soap for skin cleansing is too harsh to your face, even for the T-zone. If you use deodorant soap to wash your face, it is equivalent of using laundry detergent on your skin.
2. No need to waste money on pricey ingredients. A lot of skin cleansing products advertise special ingredients such as herbs, vitamin C or other anti-aging agents. The truth is that facial cleanser stays on the face only for a very short period of time, and the cleanser should not stay long on the face before being washed away with lukewarm water. There is not enough time for the beneficial elements to be absorbed. There is no point of paying extra for expensive ingredients in a cleanser. Stick to the basic.
3. Change cleanser for different seasons. If your skin condition changes with seasons, you should change the cleanser accordingly. During the warm seasons when the skin tends to be more active, you can choose a foaming cleanser. A cleanser containing AHA can help break down oil on the face. Skin tends to be dryer during the cold seasons. You can use oil based cleansing milk or lotion for added hydration.
4. Never skip skin cleansing before bed time. Face cleansing at the end of the evening is the most critical step in skin care regimen. Either you stay indoors or outdoors during the day, your skin could accumulate dirt, bacteria, pollutants, allergens, dead skin cells, makeup, metabolic by-products, and skin care product, etc. Without proper cleansing every night, the grime could clog pores, cause blackhead, slow down skin metabolism, make skin irritable. Never go to bed with an uncleaned face. Use makeup remover and a pH balanced cleanser before your night time skin care products.
5. Use deep cleansing facial masks once a week. The technique of a deep cleansing mask is based on the same concept of occlusive dressing technique. When the skin is covered with the mask, the surface temperature rises slightly. It stimulates circulation and softens the skin. The pores open up and the grime is easier to be extracted. The moisture is sealed under the mask so the skin won't dry up. Be sure to use the mask according to the instruction for optimal result.
