Why are Philippinos so obsessed with skin colour?
You can even buy a bar of soap in this country that does not say it lightens skin !! Can they really believe lighter skin makes them more attractive? What makes people believe something so stupid ?
Colonial mentality and media.
>333 years of Spanish rule, 1565-1898 : the natives of this country had been oppressed, and skin color was an issue. Filipinos were labeled as "Indios" because of skin color, and were treated inferior. It was a long time ago, yeah but this kind of mentality still exists. It's deeply ingrained. A lot are not aware of it.
>Media = most of the emerging TV models, actors, actresses are mestizos and mestizas "half caucasian-half asian". Or the porcelain skinned Chinese and koreans on chinovelas and koreanovelas. They have fairer skin compared to a pure Filipino. The concept of beauty is directed towards that kind of beauty - the mestizas and chinitas (chinese like) . Media is very efficient and it influences the mind of the public.
