Dry Nails
There is a nail salon test that you can use to determine if you fall under the dry nails category. Drag one finger over the surface of one of your nails, and if it catches slightly and feels coarse, chances are you have dry nails. Also dry nails look lackluster, having little to no shine. The first thing you need to do is to rehydrate them, adding moisture back with vitamin E oil that is massaged into the nail. Another nail salon tip for dry nails is that you do not need a base coat nail hardener. Your base coat should always be a hydrating substance that will add moisture to your nails. One product that works for all nail types, and is used by many quality nail salons is called Thicken Up by Sally Hansen. This will moisturize your nails as a base coat.
Brittle Nails
How do you know if you have brittle nails? Again, there is a simple nail salon test that you can perform by yourself. If your nails don't bend, then you have brittle nails. You might think that you need a nail hardener, but you would be wrong. Brittle nails still need a moisturizing base coat. Almond oil is the secret for brittle nails. You can find almond oil in the section of your grocery store where they stock olive oil and other oils. So, first apply your moisturizing base coat, then your manicure layer, then a nail hardener.
Damaged Nails
You can tell if you have damaged nails if they are flaking or cracking easily. Damaged nails are in need of a nail treatment. I would recommend Sally Hansen Triple Strong or a Naileen product to help to rehydrate your nails. These products use natural ingredients to enhance the moisture of your nails. Any kind of oil is appropriate for this category of nails, including almond oil, olive oil or vitamin E oil.
Soft Nails
Soft nails bend easily and never grow past your fingertips. Your worst enemy with soft nails is contact with water. The best nail salons stock a special oil for soft nails that is called elemi oil. Always wear gloves when you wash dishes if you fall under this category. If you have this nail type, you should use nail hardeners extensively.
Normal Nails
All nail types need to remember that drinking an adequate amount of water is paramount to maintaining nail health. When you are in a situation where you use water, such as washing dishes or taking baths or showers, I would recommend using gloves, as hot water can be a real problem with all the nail types. Also, if you typically use astringents to scrub your face, you may have found that these can dry out your nails. I recommend that you utilize gloves whenever you wash your face to maintain moisture in your nails. Now you can safely dip a cotton ball into your astringent without stripping the moisture from your nail bed.
